“Store Outside Your Door: Indigenous food and health for Alaska Native people”
By Gary Ferguson, ND (Unangan/Aleut), Community Health Services Senior Director, Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium

The Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium (ANTHC) Store Outside Your Door (SOYD) Initiative focuses on the promotion of traditional and local foods by expanding on the concepts of hunting, fishing, gathering, and growing in Alaska. Our rural communities are often considered “food deserts,” if just comparing what is available in the local store. The SOYD program has been working, over the past nine years to educate and empower communities in the knowledge of how to live vibrantly off the bounty of the land around them. We highlight successful hunter, fisher, gatherers and help share elder wisdom that has helped our First People survive for thousands of years, in the oftentimes harsh landscape that many of our communities are located. Through workshops, written materials, social media, and webisodes, we are working with Alaska Native families so children can grow up with healthy, local foods. This addresses food security, its connections to chronic disease and also helps link traditional foods with reinforcing the wisdom in our many cultures and languages – thereby also promoting resilience. The SOYD initiative started with the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture funded research project, “Helping Ourselves To Health,” where communities engaged through focus groups addressing food/nutrition security asked for more modern recipes utilizing traditional foods along with media that they could view on the TV and Internet. Our current focus is on developing maternal child health resources reinforcing traditional foods as first foods.

This presentation was made at the First Annual Conference on Native American Nutrition on September 26, 2016, in Prior Lake, Minnesota. This was the first-ever convening dedicated to integrating traditional, Indigenous knowledge and Western, academic research on the dietary health of Native Americans. It was sponsored by the University of Minnesota Healthy Foods Healthy Lives Institute and the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC), and made possible through the SMSC’s Seeds of Native Health campaign to improve Native nutrition and food access. Alaska sees 26 percent drop in health insurance rates

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) – Alaskans buying health insurance on the individual market will see a decrease of 26.5 percent in rates next year, the sole insurer in the state announced Tuesday.

Alaskans had been paying some of the highest premiums in the nation.

Premera Blue Cross Blue Shield attributed the decrease to a significant reduction in the use of medical services and the state’s establishment of a program to address high claims separately, called reinsurance.

Premera’s announcement “shows that my team’s out-of-the box thinking in creating the Alaska Reinsurance Program – approved by the Legislature – has paid off,” Alaska Gov. Bill Walker said in an email statement.

“It also supports a need for Congress to fully examine the impacts of any changes to the Affordable Care Act, which enabled the creation of this program,” said Walker, an independent who favors a bipartisan approach to healthcare overhaul.

The decrease could mean nearly 0 a month

Trump Breaking News Network – Donald Trump threatens to punish Alaska to get back at Lisa Murkowski because of health care

A new report suggests that President Donald Trump is willing to take his rage against Sen. Lisa Murkowski out on her entire home state of Alaska.

On Wednesday afternoon, both Murkowski and Dan Sullivan, Alaska’s other senator, had received calls from Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke indicating that Alaska could pay a price at the Trump administration’s hands as a result of Murkowski’s vote, according to a report by Alaska Dispatch News.

“I’m not going to go into the details, but I fear that the strong economic growth, pro-energy, pro-mining, pro-jobs and personnel from Alaska who are part of those policies are going to stop,” Sullivan told the paper.

He added that although he tried to “push back” on behalf of the residents of his state, “We’re facing some difficult times and there’s a lot of enthusiasm for the policies that Secretary Zinke and the president have been talking about with regard to our economy. But the message was pretty clear.”

Ready to deal this time? Alaska’s Murkowski is in the health-care spotlight. Again.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) is trailed by members of the media in the basement of the Capitol on Tuesday.

Lisa Murkowski walked briskly down a cavernous hallway on the first floor of the Capitol, awash in a small sea of reporters. Suddenly she paused, seemingly overcome by the pressure of the moment.

“You guys — hold,” the Republican senator from Alaska said curtly. “Give me breathing room, please. It gets a little intense. I know you guys don’t feel it, but it’s like, whoa.”

Another effort to replace the Affordable Care Act is underway, and in Washington that means one thing: Murkowski is at the center of it all — under the glare of the national spotlight and squarely on the minds of White House officials and Senate Republican leaders who are strenuously seeking her support.

That’s the way it was Wednesday, as Sens. Bill Cassidy (R-La). and Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C). huddled with
